Snobs vs. Slobs

Yes, for all of those who don't know, "snobs vs. slobs" is a genre in itself in the motion pictures. Snobs vs. slobs pictures (or, "svs" as I'll call it from now on) are almost always comedies. I think the most well known svs film, or the one that comes to mind right at the moment, is _Caddyshack_. You've got Rodney Dangerfield and Bill Murray fighting it out with Ted Knight and the rest of the Bushwood golf snobs. Dangerfield and Murray bring many fart jokes, gee you're ugly jokes, and ogling old women jokes to the table, while Knight rants about the respect and dignity of the game of golf. Of course, Michael O'Keefe's character, Danny Noonan, is in a liminal position as a young man trying to get the caddy scholarship. He has the choice to become either a snob or a slob. With the help of Chevy Chase's character, who is a rich slob, something the establishment hates, Danny becomes a slob during the golf tournament, which they win, at the end of the film.

There are movies that aren't technically svs, but have svs elements. Take _Ghostbusters_ for example. The Ghostbusters are the slobs, while the EPA inspector is the snob. Eventually, the mayor sides with the slobs, and the snob is relegated to the background, soon covered with marshmallow - it's all probably because of his dickless-ness.

Other additions to this genre are films such as _Stripes_, though in this case, the slobs are the enlisted men, while the snobs are the officers. (Yes, I realize all these films include Bill Murray. He is central to the genre). Of course, svs goes back to _The Three Stooges_; they were always fucking shit up for the richies. _The Marx Brothers_ were also purveyors of this genre, as well as Chaplin, Keaton, and Lloyd. Silent film comedies almost always involve svs in some way.

_Meet the Fockers_ could also apply. The Fockers are the slobs, in the form of hippies, while Robert DeNiro and Blythe Danner, are the snobs, in the form of squares.

As for the drinks, I haven't actually made the coconut white russian yet. Maybe this week. I don't any Kahlua. It's expensive and I'm cheap, but I'm sure it will happen soon. I once made that drink with peppermint schnapps and something else, orange juice maybe? I think Taryn remembers it better than I do. It wasn't that good. I made a drink in college that was Root Beer Schnapps and lemonade. That wasn't that good either. My friends made a drink called a "Hot Air Balloon" once, but I don't remember what was in that: it had Hawaiian Punch in it. I'll make a "screwdriver" out of anything. Vodka is obviously the best, but gin is o.k., so is rum. Whiskey and orange juice is tolerable.

Okay, I'm enjoying the svs genre commentary, but I must protest about the drinks: if it doesn't involve orange juice and VODKA (best of all hard liquors, if you ask me), then it's not a screwdriver!

In particular, I find the gin and juice abomination too upsetting to contemplate. Gin tastes like poison. Know why? It's flavored with juniper berries, which are poisonous. Everything about it screams "don't drink me"! So why do I seem to be the only one who listens?

Hey, let's not forget the frozen strawberries that also went into that drink with the peppermint and orange juice.

Jean, I'm pretty sure you don't want me to unleash the "things you probably eat on a regular basis that are in part poisonous or disease inducing" blog post. Your arguments against gin are unconvincing.

also, in college I made the "plastic screwdriver": triple sec, tang, everclear. whomp!

Okay, I fold.

But gin is still disgusting.

Yes to "How High?" I don't really want to think about "Super Troopers."
