I found this in the foreword to a James Fenimore Cooper novel:
"The governing social evil of America is provincialism; a misfortune that is perhaps inseparable from her situation."
Of course, towards the end of this novel the two main characters, who are engaged, find out they are related. "Oh, great! You're my second cousin! That rules, because now you will have an actual inheritance! Let's get married anyway, though I'm bummed I don't get to change my name!"
