so, you know how when you were watching The Matrix and you always knew it was ripped off of about 80 things but you weren't sure which things and it was so stylistically awesome you didn't care but then the second two movies sort of started to spoil you on the first one?
Well.
I've been reading John Brunner's The Shockwave Rider (1975), and it's about a guy who can hack into a huge world wide "net" via the phone lines and apparently travel through them while changing his identity at the same time.
(I know I'm slow to this party, but damn you The Matrix. John Brunner's pretty excellent.)
