Could you leave your current institution, get accepted somewhere else, write a proposal that fits your current project, then use your current chapters to get a PhD from said new institution? [If you didn't have to do any course work this would be ideal.]

Was she done with classes? I can't remember. But I'm pretty sure she hadn't 'proposed' yet.
I once went to a reading at which I learned that the novelist had written her dissertation* before applying to grad school. I don't remember who it was, though.
